Activities & Lessons
Fred the Fish
Through a simulation activity, children will apply cause and effect relationships to water pollution in a stream. They will also recognize
varied uses of water and the importance of clean water in our daily lives. By using the book, A River Ran Wild by Lynne Cherry, a true story describing
the deterioration of the Nashua River and its subsequent revitalization, students can see the real world applications of this activity.
Weight In - Rockology
In this lesson, students will learn how to use a gram balance, learn that you cannot estimate the weight of rocks simply by looking at them, estimate and compare the weights of different rocks to each other, use gram balances to test their predictions, and practice finding heavier or lighter rocks through the use of a rock weight game.
Scientific Investigation - Utah Education Network
Students learn about the scientific method while using the skills of predicting, experimenting, communicating, writing, and inferring.

Books
Collecting Data: Pick a Pancake By John Burstein. 2003. 24p. Weekly Reader Early Learning, (978-0836838206). Gr. K - 2.The Math Monsters decide to open a pancake shop, but they like four different kinds of pancakes, but they only have three mixing bowls. The Monsters decide to survey their friends to figure out which three kinds of pancakes are most popular in Monster Town. Introduces the concepts of data collection and data representation.
The Great Graph Contest By Loreen Leedy. 2006. 32p. Holiday House, (978-0823420292). Gr. 1 - 3. Gonk the toad and Beezy the lizard engage in a contest to create the best graph. The friends show how to collect and organize data.
What Is A Scientist? By Barbara Lehn, Illus. by Carol Krauss. 1999. 32p. Millbrook Press, (978-0761312987). Gr. K-2. In a deceptively simple style, this little gem introduces the scientific process. It begins on the verso with the statement, "A scientist is a person who asks questions and tries different ways to answer them." On the recto, a large, clear, colorfully bordered photo shows a first-grade scientist engaged in that investigative step. Hanna is seen wondering about fruits and vegetables. She asks, "Are there this many peas in every pea pod?" Other students are shown noticing details, drawing what they see, taking notes, measuring, designing experiments, etc. The last two pages explain that a scientist keeps trying things over and over and, perhaps best of all, has fun. A final spread repeats the photographs in miniature and sums up what a scientist does.
